History of Eventival

The creation of the Eventival project draws upon the unique expertise that came together when Adrian Johnson, Tomas Prasek and Dawna Cha formed the company in November 2008.

Tomas first saw the business potential of film festival management software in 1999, watching how the database his colleague Pavel Kalenda created for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (and which Tomas proposed to call "DataKal") improved the festival's workflow. After helping launch the Bergen IFF in Norway in the autumn of 2000 and visits to several festivals in Asia and Latin America, Tomas became convinced that an interesting niche had been discovered in the industry. In 2001, Tomas and Pavel quit their jobs at the KVIFF to pursue their goal to implement the system worldwide, starting in South Korea, Italy, and Greece. By the end of 2008, Tomas had brought over 30 film festivals from around the world on board to use the system. In many cases, the improved management allowed the festivals take on fundamental organisational changes and new artistic goals.

After two years at the Pusan IFF in South Korea where DataKal was used in 2001 and 2002 and where Dawna became its experienced user, she enrolled in the Film Studies program at FAMU in Prague. Aware of her festival experience, Tomas asked her to join the team. Between 2004 and 2007, Dawna travelled around the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, Norway, Romania and the US on behalf of DataKal, helping with onsite user training. Even after becoming Manager and Film Programmer at MOFFOM in 2004, she continued to represent DataKal at festivals abroad.

In 2003, the Berlinale hired Tomas as a Project Manager and his partner as a programmer to create a complex software system that would replace the one it had been using. The new software (for which the Berlinale Project Manager Matin Schiemann suggested the name "CuBa") was modeled on the DataKal database. Adrian Johnson was hired in 2004 to help the development; this is how he and Tomas met. After Adrian became a regular visitor to MOFFOM in Prague, he and Dawna began contemplating creating a web-based event management system that would overcome the disadvantages of server-based systems, namely significant operational costs, the need for IT staff, and the exclusion of MAC users.

In September 2008 in Paris, Adrian proposed to Tomas and Pavel Kalenda starting a company that would create a simple web application for small festivals and events that would exist as a more affordable alternative to DataKal. When Pavel suddenly decided to quit programming in October, Adrian proposed the projet to Tomas and Dawna. In November, they founded Eventival Ltd. and began developing a management tool that would answer the needs felt by festival managers operating in the world faced with a high social mobility, growing competition, and new technological possibilities.

Based on her expertise in festival processes and workflow, Dawna designed the layout of the system, Tomas analysed it for optimum performance, and Adrian built the application. In February, the Eventival software was presented at the Berlinale during the Deutsche Welle Academy. In March, the first festivals began working with it, and a Paris-based programmer Maxence Caillard was hired. In May, a Czech programmer Jan Kaltoun joined the team.

In August 2009, in response to the interest in the application and the decision to improve its design and scalability, a new team of programmers was assembled in the Czech Republic, and product design and development were moved to Prague. In November 2009, a new company of the same name, Eventival s.r.o., was established in Prague.

The first version of the new Eventival 2.0 was presented at the Berlinale in 2010 as part of the Deutsche Welle Akademie. It took one more year before it was presented at the same event in its fullness. Ever since then, the number of clients among especially film festivals has been muliplying.
